Empowering Struggling Readers with Personalized Support

At the Dyslexia Center of Utah, a formal dyslexia diagnosis is not required to enroll. While a diagnosis can provide valuable insights, it doesn’t give us the complete picture needed to determine the best placement for your child.

That’s why we conduct a comprehensive assessment for every student, regardless of whether they already have a diagnosis. Our assessment goes beyond labels, helping us uncover your child’s unique strengths, challenges, and learning needs. This deeper understanding allows us to place them at the optimal level within our Magic of Reading (MOR) program and provide personalized instruction tailored to their success.

Our assessments are a cornerstone of our approach, ensuring your child receives the targeted support they need to build confidence and excel in reading.

The Dyslexia Center of Utah (DCU) is a non-profit organization committed to helping children overcome challenges with reading, writing, and spelling. Through personalized, one-on-one tutoring, we create tailored learning experiences designed to meet each child’s unique needs.

After an initial assessment, our team carefully matches each student with a tutor who aligns with their learning style and individual goals. Every DCU tutor undergoes a rigorous screening process and comprehensive training to deliver effective, research-based instruction.

Our tutors are more than educators—they are passionate advocates for student success, dedicated to empowering children to build confidence, improve skills, and thrive in their academic journey.

Private Tutoring Cost: $300 per month. Includes twice-weekly, 45-minute sessions, totaling 80 sessions yearly.

MOR is a comprehensive reading intervention program designed for students in PreK through 8th grade, emphasizing phonemic awareness and phonics. Rooted in the principles of the Orton-Gillingham method, it integrates key components such as phonological awareness, handwriting, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension.

Our Approach:

DCU employs a multimodal systematic teaching approach (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) to engage students effectively:

1. Reading Program: We offer a systematic, phonics-based reading program integrating spelling rules and phonograms, tailored to different learning styles.

2. Progress Monitoring: We continually assess each child's progress and provide feedback to parents.

3. Individual Pace: Students advance at their own pace to ensure concept mastery.

4. Curriculum: Our curriculum is based on the proven, research-based Orton-Gillingham approach.

5. Fluency Exercises: We enhance reading confidence and ability through frequent, short exercises.

6. Sight Words and Dictation: These are practiced in every lesson, with concept mastery checked through dictation.

7. Sessions: Weekly, individualized sessions are available in person or online, complemented by engaging activities for reinforcement.

8. Learning Environment: Our positive learning environment helps students thrive.

9. Concept Building: Instruction begins with basic sounds and advances to complex syllable types and morphology.

10. Spelling Rules: We teach five basic spelling rules and various spelling patterns.

Our MOL (Magic of Letters) and MOR (Magic of Reading) curricula have demonstrated exceptional results. Our program is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, which utilizes a direct, explicit, cognitive, cumulative, and multimodal teaching method.
